Business owners may or may not be covered by their insurance if they experience damage to their property from falling trees. In terms of a tree falling onto a building, whoever sustained the damage should seek coverage from his or her insurance. Note, however, that an individual’s insurance may pursue subrogation and attempt to recover funds if they believe the damage was the result of a failure of another property owner to properly maintain his or her trees. Trees can be assessed and pruned with the help of an arborist. If damage from a falling tree has occurred, the business owner should keep careful records and visual evidence such as photographs or videos of the damage, and contact his or her insurance carrier immediately. Cars and personal residences may also have coverage for damage from trees through their respective insurance policies.
